What I Learned from Building My Own Boss Fight Tracker

Ever feel like every time you open a door, the video game battle music starts?

Same.

Rather than resist that feeling, I leaned into it. If my life feels like an adventure, I might as well gear up and get moving. So I created a tool to help me stay in that mindset: the Boss Fight Tracker.

It’s an organizational system styled like a tabletop RPG — and it’s become one of the most powerful self-motivation tools in my kit.

Here’s how it works:

I recognize my challenges (and to-do list), then label each one as a foe to defeat.Suddenly, I’m the hero — and my tasks are monsters, not burdens.

Now they feel tangible. Beat-able. Like any good RPG boss, they have patterns — and I can learn them.

This system helps me fight off the crippling doubt and overwhelm that shows up when I open my outline folder. As an aspiring author, it’s hard to face the enormity of a story. It has to make sense. Resonate with readers. Satisfy me.

But if it’s just a game?

No biggie. No pressure. Just progress.
